Battery Maintenance Checklist for the Average Auto Owner

A dead battery leaves you stranded without a way to start your car. As experts in automotive service, the team at Signal Hill Foreign Auto Services recommends these simple maintenance checks to maximize your battery’s lifespan and performance:

Check Water Levels Monthly

Properly filled batteries last longer. Inspect fill lines and refill with distilled water as needed to keep plates covered. We can perform this check for you.

Avoid Parasitic Drain

Drain from accessories like dome lights or a poorly sealed trunk can prematurely discharge your battery overnight. Identify and remove excess drain causes.

Maintain Cable Corrosion

Clean any buildup on terminals and reapply dielectric grease twice yearly to ensure a strong connection. Corrosion is a leading cause of crank no-starts.

Consider Battery Technology

Opt for AGM or Gel cell batteries if your daily commute includes a lot of short trips. Their design requires less maintenance than traditional lead-acid style batteries.

Jump Safely

Use jumper cables in the proper clamp order – positive to positive, negative to negative ground point. Never jump a frozen battery as it may crack.

Charge Batteries Professionally

Our technicians can perform slow battery chargers safely in the shop when needed to minimize damage from at-home chargers.

Check Charge State Regularly

Have our pros use a digital analyzer to detect undercharging issues early. Discovered promptly, fixes are less expensive.

With periodic care, batteries provide years of reliable starts. Our goal is to ensure your investment in safety and convenience is protected through simple checks. Be sure to contact us with any battery concerns.
